Meet a Director: Cat

It’s time for our last director introduction! You’ve already met her in your interview, but Cat’s here today to say hi.

Cat’s biggest job during the summer is taking care of YOU, but you may also find her handing out t-shirts, coordinating the Honor Council, or helping out with Program Staff.

Watch the video below to hear from Cat, and then check out her Q+A afterwards. Want to say hi?

Get to know Cat:

  • Years at camp: 12 as a camper, 15 on staff!
  • During the year, I…. Get to talk to all of YOU about the best job ever.
  • Here’s what you can find me doing during the summer now: Having one-on-one meetings with staff, organizing t-shirts, and jumping in to every Greystone Groove dance I can.
  • Come find me if… You want a hug on a hard day or someone to celebrate a good day with!
  • These are a few of my favorite things: Reading the newest thriller, trying out new desserts, and meeting your dog.
  • Something I’m loving right now: Ellie Holcomb’s Psalms album and Full Swing - apparently I like golf??
  • Something I want you to know about this summer: it will be different from what you expect but has the potential to be so much better! Come in flexible and willing to make it all about the campers and you won’t be disappointed.
  • My best advice to counselors is… pray all the time! None of us can do this job relying on our own strength, but the Lord works in our weakness and He is already preparing the way for you to make an impact this summer.
  • Working at Greystone as a counselor is… never long enough!

Preparing for Camp

Orientation will be here SOON, and we are counting the days until you arrive at camp! May is full-on camp-prep mode for us, and we know you’ll be doing lots of packing and preparing as well over the next couple of weeks.

This Newsletter will be your one-stop-shop for important to-do’s and reminders before you arrive at camp. Have specific questions? Just reach out to us! We want to make sure you feel prepared and confident every step of the way. Here we go!

  • Required - Pre-Arrival Health Screening Form: ALL staff will need to fill out this quick online form before you arrive for Orientation! This form will go live in your camp account the week before you arrive and will ask you a few simple questions. We’ll send you a reminder, but mark your calendar now so that you don’t forget!
  • Fill out a background check. This will take you 2 minutes! Just make sure you do it by May 22nd.
  • Shipping your bags to camp ahead of time? Fill out this form! This will help us keep track of your bags and get them to you when you arrive.
  • Know your Enneagram Number: We’ll spend some time in Orientation talking about the Enneagram and how it can help you work with those around you. You may already know your number, but if you don’t, we recommend checking out this book or taking a test. If you can’t figure it out before you arrive, don’t worry! We’ll go over the basics during Orientation.
  • Department GroupMe Groups: Earlier this month you should have been added to a new GroupMe group for the counselors you’re teaching your activity with. Look for that if you haven’t joined, and go over and say hi! If you’re having trouble accessing the group, and she can help you out.
  • Important forms and to-do’s - don’t forget! Here are some important things you need to check off BEFORE you arrive at camp: complete your staff forms (these were due May 1st), order from the Staff Store (this was due April 25th), watch the Ministry Safe Training if you haven’t completed it previously (by May 22nd), and fill out your background check form (by May 22nd). If this is your first year at Greystone, make sure to look at the New Staff page. The Newsletter homepage has a checklist to make it easy on you!

Arriving at camp healthy:

Infections and illnesses spread quickly in a close-knit community like ours. We want to start the summer with a healthy group of staff, and that begins at home! With this in mind, in the week before camp, we ask that you:

  • Limit your exposure to others, especially anyone that might have signs or symptoms of illness.
  • Monitor your health. If you have any signs or symptoms of illness, or you realize you’ve been exposed to anything contagious, please contact us to make a plan for your arrival.
  • Complete a Pre-Camp Health Screening form which will go live in your camp account a few days before you arrive.

Be a Great Day Group leader:

Great Day Groups are staff activity groups that meet throughout the summer, and they are led by counselors like you! These groups can be formed around an interest, an activity, or anything that sounds like fun to you.

New for 2024: we are launching staff Small Groups separately from Great Day Groups! These groups will meet weekly throughout the summer for encouragement and support. That means that Great Day Groups can get even more creative, so we’d encourage you to think outside of the box!

Past Great Day Groups have stargazed, run the Lake Road, gone on adventures, or read through a book… just to name a few. If there’s something you love to do, you can make it a Great Day Group!

If you’re interested in leading a Great Day Group this summer, fill out this quick form to get the conversation started. Have questions or want to share your idea for one? She’d love to talk to you about it.

Arrival Dates and Times

We know it’s hard to keep all of the details straight, so here’s a quick reference guide to arrival times and dates for different departments. If your activity area requires Pre-Orientation Training, it will be listed below, and Ellen-Anne will have been in touch with you about it. Otherwise, we’ll see you for Full-Staff Orientation between 2:00-3:30 p.m. on Monday, May 26th!

If you have questions about your arrival date or time, and she can answer!

Pre-Orientation Trainings:

All of our regular Pre-Orientation training groups will arrive at Greystone’s front gate entrance (80 Apple Hill Lane, Zirconia, NC). Make sure to check your arrival time below! If it looks like you are going to arrive early, please grab Starbucks, call a friend, or take a walk around the nearby Tuxedo Park. We will see you at the time listed for your arrival - not before!

If you are attending a Pre-Orientation training, make sure you have filled out a Pre-Orientation Training Registration form.

  • Riding, High Adventure, Aerial Yoga, and WSI (Swimming Staff): 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 19th (swim staff, remember to bring a laptop!)
  • High Ropes: 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21st
  • Lifeguarding and Glass Beads/Fusion: 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 22nd (lifeguards, bring a laptop!)
  • Metal Jewelry, Ceramics, Painting, Crafts, Cooking, and Farm Barn: 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 23rd
  • Department Heads: 2:00-3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 25th

What to expect during Pre-Orientation:

Pre-Orientation has a slightly different “feel” to our regular Orientation, but it is still busy and fun! This is a great time to bond with your department, as you guys will be spending most of your time together.

Most of your day will be spent in focused training for your activity, but you may have a little bit of free time in the evenings to hang out around camp or explore our local area. Enjoy the slightly slower pace of Pre-Orientation, because once we get to regular staff training, your days will be booked and it’s full-speed-ahead to the summer!

Full-Staff Orientation:

If you are not contracted to be here for Pre-Orientation training, we will see you between 2:00-3:30 p.m. on Monday, May 26th at Greystone’s staff entrance (21 Camp Greystone Ln, Zirconia, NC). Please help us out by not arriving before 2:00 p.m.!

All about Orientation

Packing for Orientation:

We’re giving you lots of tips about packing a little further down in this Newsletter, but make sure you pack in a separate bag for Orientation week. You’ll be staying in a cabin with other counselors and won’t fully move in until you get your June Camp cabin assignments, so pack clothes and toiletries for the first five days of camp in an overnight bag.

You’ll also need a pillow, a sleeping bag or your camp bedding, and a sweatshirt and raincoat for unexpected weather. You’ll keep the rest of your items in your car or in the Counselor Hut (if you’re not bringing a car), so you can grab things if you need them, but it will make your life way easier if you pack for Orientation separately.

Once you get here:

This is when the fun starts! After you pull in the gates, we’ll greet you, give you some materials for Orientation, and have you visit our nurses for a health check. We’ll then help you get settled into your Orientation cabin and introduce you to your cabinmates (who will be the people you’re teaching classes with this summer in your department!). We get started quickly after that with our first meeting, introductions, and a camp tour.

If you’re arriving early for Pre-Orientation Training, the process will look very similar! You’ll drive in the front gate (80 Apple Hill Lane, Zirconia), be greeted by our Group Leaders, meet the other staff members in your department, and get settled into your cabin before enjoying dinner at camp. No matter when you arrive, Orientation is all about helping you feel prepared, so we will take it from there and make sure you know exactly what is happening next!

Packing tips:

One of the things our first-year staff wonder about the most is packing. What will I need? How much should I bring? What if I under-pack or overpack? What’s normal? We get it, and we want to help! Still wondering about something after reading? Shoot us a quick text - nothing is too small or silly!

  • Start with our Staff Packing List for the basics. Make sure to scroll through to the 2nd page for tips and tricks from the people who know best - our former staffers!
  • Consider what you’ll pack in. You will move all your items yourself multiple times throughout the summer, so portability is key. Many staff like to use plastic tubs or duffels (instead of a bulky camp trunk) for this reason.
  • Focus most on the items you’ll use and wear every single day: shorts and t-shirts, good shoes, a fan, a flashlight, and comfy bedding. Yes, it’s nice to have a couple of cuter outfits and a costume for every occasion, but those will sit in your drawer a lot of the time.
  • A few necessities you may not have thought about: an alarm clock (no phone in your cabin to wake you up!), a watch (same, for on the go; no Apple watches please!), a head lamp (many of our staff prefer these to flashlights!), and stationery for all the snail mail you’ll send.
  • It’s always handy to have your own set of scissors, markers, and duct tape - you’ll be surprised by how much you use them!
  • You’ll be glad to have a comfortable set of whites (the all-white outfits we wear on Sundays and for our traditional EP’s. These can be anything you want, as long as they are all-white with no crazy designs or logos). Think white running shorts and a t-shirt - great for pulling on when you’re sweaty and gross!
  • Overall, don’t stress too much! If you forget something, there’s always Amazon (and lots of new staffer friends to borrow from!). Camp is simple, and your packing can be as well.

FAQ Corner

Pray with us!

This spring we’ve spent focused time praying for our campers, parents, and your fellow staffers, and we hope it’s been as life-giving for you as it has been for us! This month’s topic is obvious but no less essential. It’s time to pray in earnest for the summer ahead!

Spend time over the next couple of weeks in prayer for our time together this summer. Pray for a healthy camp community and, even more importantly, for a community defined by the Fruit of the Spirit. Pray that all of the details would come together even better than we could have planned, in a way that is only attributed to the Lord.

Pray for fun, growth, and life-long memories for each camper. Pray that our parents would have total peace and confidence as they drop their girls. Pray that God would be glorified in everything we do!

Verse to meditate on:

“Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Fear the Lord, you his holy people, for those who fear him lack nothing. The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.” Psalm 34:3-10
