Counselor Career Connections: Thank You, Alums and Parents!

Last fall, we announced our Career Connections program, designed to help our staff find mentorship, expertise, and connections with alumnae and parents who work in their desired future field. We were blown away by the number of responses we received, and we are so grateful for your willingness to support our staff as they transition from camp to career!

We were able to match almost all of our interested staff with alumnae or parents who have valuable wisdom to share, and we caught up with a few of those counselors to hear more about their experience. If you are interested in being paired with a counselor in the future, fill out this quick form to join our Career Connections network. We’ll be in touch if we have a counselor who’s a good match for you!

Charlotte Cain: Mental Health Counseling

  • What made you interested in the Career Connections program? Although I was excited to meet a professional in my future career field, this was not the primary reason I signed up. I was most excited about the opportunity to learn more about how to instill my values and beliefs into my career one day. The community that surrounds Greystone is one that is founded on loving God and loving others. This program is so special because I was able to learn about professionalism while also maintaining my values.
  • Who did you connect with, and how did you talk to them? I connected with Kristi James (LCMHCA) through email at first, and then we got to meet in person while we were both at camp this past summer.
  • What was the most helpful thing that came out of that mentorship? My favorite part of this mentorship was the comfort I felt with Kristi. I felt like I could ask her about anything. She talked me through the importance of having a work and home life balance. This was very motivating as this was something that I was nervous about.
  • Did talking to your mentor clarify anything for you? I mentioned that I was nervous about having the skills and abilities it takes to be successful as a licensed counselor. Kristi reminded me that I have to trust in the Lord and in the education that I would receive to give me the strength and refine my abilities. I am so thankful for this program and for Kristi’s willingness to share!

Sophie Chan: Entrepreneurship

  • What made you interested in the Career Connections program? I was interested in it because as I am looking into potential careers, I wanted wise counsel from someone who also prioritizes camp as I do. I also think camp parents and alumnae are driven, andI look up to them in so many ways!
  • Who did you connect with, and how did you talk to them? I talked to Catherine Fraise. We emailed at first and then exchanged numbers and had a phone call! She was so kind and generous with her time.
  • What was the most helpful thing that came out of that mentorship? The most helpful thing that came out of the mentorship was probably the insight to starting a brand and all that it entails! I am minoring in entrepreneurship and was really interested in all that she had to tell me.
  • Did talking to your mentor clarify anything for you? Talking to Catherine didn’t change my future career goals - it just got me excited for all of the things coming ahead!

Eva Braasch:

  • What made you interested in the Career Connections program? Greystone people are always so kind and willing to help. I knew anyone I was put in touch with would be willing to share their experience and offer good advice.
  • Who did you connect with, and how did you talk to them? I connected with Wendy Skorburg. I met her for lunch at a restaurant in our neighborhood, in May, before I went to camp.
  • What was the most helpful thing that came out of that mentorship? Mrs. Skorburg told me a lot about how she ended up working in banking and how working for a Texas bank is so different than working for a national bank. She highlighted how people came from all different backgrounds, and how interesting Benchmark Bank is.
  • Did talking to your mentor clarify something for you? Meeting with Mrs. Skorburg gave me a better understanding of what a banking career looks like. It was so helpful to learn about what her day to day looks like.
  • Have you and your mentor stayed in touch? Yes. I am hoping to meet with her again over Christmas break. Mrs. Skorburg also gave me a shoutout over the summer while I was at Greystone which was so kind.
  • Anything else you’d want to share about the program or your experience? Such a wonderful program! It is so great to be able to connect with Greystone families outside of camp.
