Things You May Not Know - New Camper Blog Series

New campers, we are getting so close to the start of camp! Are you getting excited?! We are bubbling with excitement over at camp and cannot wait to get the summer started!

As a new camper, it can sometimes feel like there are A LOT of things you don’t know. But, I’m here to tell you….don’t worry! We will help you every step of the way, making sure you are fully prepared for whatever is next. After just a few days of being at camp, you will be talking the Greystone lingo and showing other campers where to go. As you get excited, here are a few things you may not know (yet!):

Cabin names: We have three different types of cabins – Tentalows, Bungalows, and Cabins. Our youngest girls at each session are in Tentalows, our middle ages in Bungalows, and our oldest girls in Cabins. Some of our buildings hold more than one cabin, and over the years, have earned themselves some nicknames. For example, Cabins 6, 7, & 8 are all in one building, and campers refer to it as the Palace. Bungalows 5 & 6 are all in one building, now known as the Villa. All of our cabins are really similar, and no need to know the cabin names before you arrive…you’ll pick up quick once you get the lay of the land.

Ice huts and snacks: In 2015, we put in three industrial ice machines around camp; you can stop by these anytime and fill your waterbottle with perfect, crunchy pellet ice. These ice huts also have yummy snacks like string cheese and Beanitos…you can pick up a tasty treat if you are feeling hungry during the day.

Candy Shoppe: Once a day, you can grab a candy treat from our Candy Shoppe. It’s free! And, just some insider scoop…you can order regular candy like Skittles or KitKats, but if you want to try them frozen, you can instead call them Frittles or FritFrats…just some funny camp lingo for you!

Picnics: We eat most of our meals in the Dining Hall, but we also LOVE to have the occasional picnic with your cabin. We always eat a picnic on Carnival night (so we can start the Carnival fun even sooner). We also enjoy a Taco in a Bag picnic (a camp favorite!), and numerous other picnics at our longer sessions. You’ll love spreading out your cabin’s picnic blanket and eating with your cabin group.

The Linen Hut: The Linen Hut is a small building you’ll want to find quickly! If your cabin runs out of toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, hand soap, or other similar items, you can pick them up at the Linen Hut.

Pill Hill: Have medicines you take while you’re at camp? You’ll be visiting our Health Hut through our special line called Pill Hill. There, you’ll wait with other campers to pick up your medicines before hurrying off to the next thing. The Pill Hill area got a big make-over this winter - you’ll love the spiffed-up look.

Skee Ball: We have multiple Skee Ball machines right under our Dining Hall. Come play a game with your friends during free time or after meals! (And some super secret insider scoop: we just purchased tons of new games you can find in this same area - tabletop shuffleboard, jumbo chess, and more!)

Camp ministers: at our June, Main, and August camp sessions, we have a camp minister that teaches at Morning Assembly and leads our church services. These ministers are current or old RUF ministers at college campuses and love coming to camp with their families each summer. You’ll love learning from them and will love getting to know their families!

Lost and Found: Also under our Dining Hall, we have a Lost and Found area. If you can’t find something, check the Lost and Found…most things find their way back there!

Just a few different “camp things” that are good to know before you arrive. But, just remember, once you get to camp, you’ll pick up on everything very quickly.
