Learn Some Greystone Songs - New Camper Blog Series

Last week as part of our New Camper Blog Series, we talked about the ins and outs of the Dining Hall, a place you will be spending quite a bit of your time. One of the things we mentioned about the Dining Hall is that we end each of our meals with some Greystone songs.

What are these Greystone songs, you may be asking…well, I am here to clear things up and set you at ease. First, some history…for many years, campers participated in a Greystone Song contest, working as a cabin group to make up a new song for camp. Cabins would present their songs at Evening Program, hoping their song would be picked! If your cabin won the song competition, you would then teach your new Greystone song to all of camp, and it would be added to the other well-loved songs from past years.

With over 90 years of camping, we have been singing many of our Greystone songs for a very long time! While we don’t do the song competition at camp anymore, we still enjoy singing many of the Greystone tunes from past years.

As a new camper, you won’t know our Greystone songs before you arrive, but just know this – we sing many of the most popular songs over and over and over and over – you will pick up on the words (and motions!) very quickly.

In an effort to help you learn some of our most popular camp songs, we asked some of our current campers to send in videos of themselves singing the songs and doing the motions. No need to learn these before you arrive (I promise, you’ll pick them up quick – we sing them over and over!)…however, if you’d like to start getting the hang of them, these videos are a great way to start.

Here are three of our most popular camp songs, and just for all you history nerds out there (that would include me!), Smile won the song contest in 1931 and Happiness in 1950. [Any of our Alums out there know when Happy Am I won the contest??]

New campers – enjoy these videos, and we cannot wait to be singing these songs with you soon!
