Last night’s Play was amazing. Two weeks of focused rehearsals and hard work memorizing lines during rest hour paid off. I teared up as Adelyn (Annie) opened the show with “Maybe”, laughed out loud when Charley (Miss Hanagan) made her first appearance, and surprisingly teared up again when Summit (Sandy) and Annie met for the first time (The role of Sandy has never been played with such loving perfection… she smiled like a golden retriever and maintained eye contact with Annie the entire show). I was proud of the cast, crew, and directors, who invested long nights and early mornings. All that hard work came together for a perfect show at the last minute (typical in any production). The program included set design, props, sound, lighting, choreography, singing, and acting. It was amazing. The standing ovation was heartfelt and immediate when the curtain call began. It was wonderful.
Today is going to be perfect. Blue sky, comfortable temperature, very little chance of rain. It should be a lovely setting for Council Fire and Closing Vespers tonight. I will tell the “MeMe Bird” story that my grandmother, Gigi, first told seventy years ago in the same place and at the same moment in camp. We will make a circle around the flagpole and light our candles one last time. It is a glorious evening, and a few of the girls will most certainly cry. This is how it has always been. Though much has changed, much has remained the same… genuine friendships, significant growth, and funny memories are intertwined with poignant moments to create a warm feeling that lasts a lifetime. After we say “goodnight, Greystone girls,” we quietly return to our cabins. The awards and candles will be packed away with other camp memorabilia, artwork, letters, and journals.
We love your girls. They are great (a fact that you know well). Their kindness, humor, unselfishness, helpful spirits, gifts, creativity, and charm are remarkable. Their impact is remarkable… multiply that by the many days we have shared singing, dancing, laughing, talking, thinking, learning, playing, and praying. You can imagine why we think camp is the best place on earth. It is good.
Thank you for allowing us to be a part of their story.
