I love my new office location just above the tennis hut. It offers an authentic glimpse into camp life as I observe girls attending and participating in this great class. Trying out new things is one of the great benefits of going to camp, and our Junior campers are trying out LOTS of new things. Tennis is one of them and always fun to watch.

Many campers have never held a racket or hit a tennis ball. Some have never even thought about doing it… they think they are too young or not sporty enough to try it out. Tennis is a little intimidating (with the equipment, the rules, and the number of people who can see you play). They fear the embarrassment of “messing up”.

At camp, there is no option but to try! The whole cabin is going to their various classes together. They are doing everything once, so the girls get used to new things. Sometimes they mess up, but it is not embarrassing because everyone is messing up! They try again, and again, and again. The counselors cheer every effort, with rapid-fire coaching after every try as the girls slowly improve. Then suddenly, everything clicks. “I DID IT!” In that moment, the joy has no bounds! It is magical and celebrated by all.

Today is Challenge Day, when the Odds and Evens compete in classes all morning to see which team will win the glory of the day. Girls are dressed in their Green or Gold outfits and engaged in the little games with a wonderful passion to see. Everything just steps up a bit when we add in a little competition.

The winner is announced at lunch, to deafening cheers, then we get ready for the next big thing: CARNIVAL!!! We set up a bunch of inflatable rides and food tents on the softball field. The effect is similar to a county fair. Lots of junk food, exciting rides, fun music, perpetual dance parties, and S’mores.

Junior Camp is a whirlwind of wonderful moments and a delight to camper and counselor alike. We can’t believe that tomorrow will be Banquet Day, when we celebrate the end of our first session of the summer. Your girls are amazing campers, and we are so grateful they are here. Thank you for allowing them to be Greystone Girls!
