Last night, everyone from Bungalow 3 to Cabin 12 performed with their cabin on the big stage. It was a fun show… outstanding choreography, fun costumes, and unexpected twists. Greystone Girls LOVE a show. It is part of what makes camp awesome! The mix of personalities in every cabin group is delightful as each one enters the show with sometimes surprising expressions of creativity. We laugh and we cheer for each other with a genuine sense of appreciation for what each person brings to the group.

At camp, all are accepted, and many are celebrated for their unique personality traits. When the basis of our relationships with each other is kindness and love, it is incredible how the little things that separate us in “the real world” just fall away. We learn to make eye contact with each other and strike up a friendly conversation. Hundreds of interactions in a day are marked by smiles and acceptance. The confidence that arises from these brief interactions lifts our spirits and fills our hearts with joy.

If you have never been to camp, just imagine how wonderful such a community would make you feel. My great-grandfather saw its impact on his daughter, Virginia. Gigi was a precocious child who drew the attention of everyone when she entered a room. She and the other campers thrived in the supportive atmosphere of camp, surrounded by so many friends and mentors. Camp helped her discover the gifts that God had given her and gave her confidence in who she was. The growth that occurs here is profoundly beneficial, and we are grateful that it continues to resonate.

Last night it was obvious that most of the girls were already feeling a sense of confidence and exuberant joy because the singing in the Dining Hall was shockingly loud. Everyone was comfortable, liked their tables, and looked forward to the upcoming EP; their high spirits found expression in singing together. Campers make camp what it is! They sense their power for good, and this power motivates them to try new things and take on leadership roles in various settings. It is wonderful to see!

Tonight’s EP is a cabin bonding activity with a “Willy Wonka” theme. It is a super active (super fun) EP that challenges cabins to work together as a team, doing lots of fun challenges all around camp. At the end of the program, we gather at the Pavilion for a final contest and big dance party. The girls love it… a nice change from the less active shows we’ve enjoyed so far. We will give the girls plenty of time to clean up afterward, then they can enjoy a great night’s sleep.

We would like to address some feedback we have received regarding the photos. We agree that the number and quality of our photos were not up to standard for the first few days. There is a reason that they are not as good as Junior Camp (where many of you were last year). Junior Camp is the SLAM DUNK WINNER for providing the best photos! Those Junior mom photographers are FANTASTIC, but we can’t get them for our longer sessions. Most of our photographers are “just” regular counselors (taking pictures is a small part of their day). They are just now getting used to the equipment and learning how to do the job. They will get better with practice. Every day, we hope to improve!

Also, please know that we care deeply about providing you with high-quality photos. We hire several professionals to come in from town, but they are not available all the time; some days we have the pros on site, while on other days we don’t. So photo quality and numbers will ebb and flow.

Finally… Remind your daughter to get in front of the camp camera! The camper who wants to have her picture taken will get her picture taken (the converse is also true!).

Thank you for your patience! We are shaking the dust off as we get started - we are working with our photographers to improve, and we hope you will soon see the difference.

Thank you very much for providing this experience for your daughters. We know it is a big deal to spend so much money/time and be away from the family. We saw your tears as you drove away on Monday morning- tears of happiness mixed with the deep emotions that only parents understand. Thank you for your support. Camp is a wonderful thing!
