Last night’s Play Production was wonderful. Two and a half weeks of focused rehearsals and hard work memorizing lines during rest hour paid off. Even a mid-show thunderstorm did not break the pace of the show, as the girls soldiered on as if nothing was amiss. I was proud of them and their counselors, who invested long nights and early mornings in creating meticulous class plans that ultimately came together with a perfect show at the last minute (typical in any production). The program included set design, props, sound, lighting, choreography, singing, and acting. It was amazing. The standing ovation was heartfelt and immediate when the curtain call began. It was wonderful.
The weather is perfect. Blue sky, high temperatures (84 degrees), very little chance of rain. It should be a lovely setting for Council Fire and Closing Vespers tonight. I will tell the “MeMe Bird” story that my grandmother, Virginia, first told seventy years ago in the same place and at the moment in the progression of camp. Though much has changed, much has remained the same… genuine friendships, significant growth, and funny memories are intertwined with poignant moments to create a warm feeling that lasts a lifetime. After we say “goodnight Greystone girls” the girls quietly leave and go back to their cabins. The awards and candles will be packed away with other camp memorabilia, artwork, letters, and journals.
We love your girls. They are wonderful in ways that astound (a fact that you know well). Their kindness, unselfishness, attentiveness, abilities, sense of humor, whimsy, creativity, and charm are remarkable. The impact of so many campers and counselors who are like this is remarkable… multiply that by the many days we have shared singing, dancing, laughing, talking, thinking, learning, playing, and praying. You can imagine why we think camp is the best place on earth. It is good.
Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your family.
