Well, we blinked and it’s now almost the end of August Camp, which means that back-to-school season is coming soon. No matter if you’re heading back in person, online, at home, or a combination of them all, this year is sure to bring its own unique challenges and triumphs. But you’re Greystone Girls, you were made for this!

Laura gives the best advice at camp (wash, water, ‘screen anyone?) - that’s why we call her our camp mom! So of course, we had to sit down with her and get her top pieces of advice and words of wisdom for starting back to school. Read on for what she always told her own daughters, and what she’d tell you if she could see you today!

  • First, and maybe most importantly, be nice to everyone! Especially the people that you’re tempted to ignore. You never know what they are going through, and the impact that your kindness might have. It costs you nothing, and could mean everything to them!
  • As far as your school work, keep up with it from the beginning! Especially your foreign languages, which are always building on what you learned before. It is hard to catch up once you get behind. Also, don’t ever pass up the chance for bonus points or extra credit!
  • Don’t underestimate the importance of sleep! Getting a good night’s sleep is more important than slaying up late to cram. And in the morning, make sure to eat a good breakfast. There’s a reason we eat a big one at camp - you can’t function well without it!
  • Drink lots of water. I’m not kidding, I said that to them all the time. They’d say, “I have a headache.” “Are you drinking enough water?” “I don’t feel very good.” “Drink more water.” It cures more than you would think!
  • Remember to be grateful to your teachers! Say, “Thank you!” often. They are going above and beyond for you every day, and don’t get thanked nearly enough.
  • It’s not worth giving yourself a hard time when you get a bad grade - it’s too late to change it now! Give yourself grace and focus on what you can do better next time instead. You are loved and valuable no matter what, even if school isn’t your thing.
  • It can be so tempting to get sucked into negativity at school, but remember to claim that it’s a great day, whether you feel it or not! Even during the year, this is a day the Lord has made just for you and for your good and His glory. He has good things for you in every day.
