Sun, Fun, Chums, Done

I am a big fan of the wisdom of Shakespeare’s often quoted insight that Brevity is the soul of wit. That being said, I am guilty of rambling on and on (when talking and when writing). So today, I will get to the point very quickly.

  • Sun… The weather is delightful. Prototypical summer weather that accentuates the camp experience perfectly.
  • Fun… We are having a blast… in classes, in programs, in the dining hall… Everywhere! A new club formed yesterday (The Ginger Snaps for all red heads). A new theme day announced today (Thursday is now Jersday, wear a jersey). Fun hand shakes, fun dances, fun singing… camp is just good, silly, witty, engaging, fun.
  • Chums… All about the friends. Making new ones all the time!

Camp is going really well; I really could not be more satisfied with this week. Tonight we will enjoy our first “crazy” EP of the summer with the wildly popular Protect your Senior EP. This is when we get super messy then experience a whole camp color throw dance party. The girls LOVE the photographs from this night, the memories will bring smiles for years to come.

Now a little rambling.

A rambling worthy subject would be a “shout out” to our kitchen. I have not mentioned the food at camp very much this year… but it is special. This is from a foodie who studies Yelp and Trip Advisor for hours before choosing a lunch location in a new city. I cook most of the meals in our family and subscribe to The New York Times Cooking service. I read cookbooks for fun… I LOVE food and I sincerely LOVE the food at camp!

That I LOVE camp food is something that surprises me when I think of it, for I know how hard it is to consistently excel in this task (especially in an institutional setting). Not only do we cook everything from scratch, but we even bake our own bread. The kitchen does all this work with a small group of professionals (Gervais, Alli, and Thomas) and a large group of teenagers. While the Program is a ton of fun (huge return ratio’s every year) it is also a ton of work. The work is daunting (imagine the dirty dishes from your biggest party, then multiply)… and they face that pile of dishes three times a day. They never get “salty”, but face the task with good cheer and professionalism week after week. They are an inspiration!

They represent what I see in most of our Generation Z campers and counselors… they as a group are an inspiration. Never have we had better counselors, never have we had better campers. They have a wide ranging appreciation of other people, consistently seek the greater good, are always willing to sacrifice, and are exceptionally kind. Gen Z make camp AMAZING.

The details of the day:

  • Breakfast: French Toast and Sausage
  • Lunch: Parmesean Chicken Strip Caesar Salad
  • Dinner: Flank Steak and Polenta
  • Breakfast Club Joke: “Chardonnay”

Good “Dad” Jokes to share (you can use them in your next letter if you want!):

  • Did you hear about the restaurant on the moon? Great food, no atmosphere.
  • What do you call a fake noodle? An Impasta.
  • How many apples grow on a tree? All of them.
  • Want to hear a joke about paper? Nevermind it’s tearable.
