I love that Steve Martin skit where he had difficulty communicating with a cab driver in Paris. He tries speaking in an accent, and with exhasperation exclaims: “It’s like those French have a different word for everything!”.

Camp can sometimes feel that way. We have little inside jokes, short cut phrases, and names that are only used at “The Bubble”. So here is a non-exhaustive list for reference:

Special Days

  • Maui Monday… Hawaiian shirts
  • Wildlife Wednesday… shirts that feature birds, fish, cats, dogs… really any animal, wild or tame.
  • Throwback Thursday… celebration of “old times”
  • Jersday… wear a jersey on Thursday (new)
  • Freedom Friday… American themed shirts (not really caught on, but close).
  • Sleep Late Friday… reveille blows at 8:30, an extra hour of sleep!

Dining Hall

  • Table Girls… campers who set the tables and get the hot food.
  • Bread Window… where we get bread and dessert
  • Window 2…Hot food picked up
  • Window 3… dirty dishes returned
  • Drink Window… pick up drinks and drop off cups/pitchers
  • Silent Celebrate… raise hands with jazz hands but no noise
  • Keep ya Plates… a non-cookie dessert
  • Crackers… nilla wafers (served after EP)
  • OCP… Oreo Cream Pie, everyone’s favorite dessert

Daily Routines

  • Job Wheel… how cabins rotate clean up chores
  • Bells… how we change classes and call table girls
  • Bugles… how we announce whole camp routines of the day
  • DMC… Deep Meaningful Conversation
  • Whites… what we wear on special occasions
  • DHP… Dining Hall Porch
  • East Side… the left side of the porch
  • West Side… the right side of the porch
  • The Pit… where most campers sit in the Pavilion
  • Shoppe Date… arranged meeting that occurs between Candy Shoppe and EP
  • Tuck Ins… after Devotion time in cabin, counselors check in with each camper.

Places

  • Grady’s Nail… where we put maintenance requests
  • FAC… Fine Arts Center
  • The Grey… White Hall
  • Putt Cove… the Marina
  • Greystone Point… a granite boulder that overhangs Lake Edith
  • The Meadow… a remote hillside field by the lake
  • Apple Hill… the meadow on top of Apple Hill (views!)
  • Grey Lodge… my house
  • Deep Country… where program counselors live
  • Bear Mountain… a mountain 10 minutes from camp (hiking)
  • Thunderhead… a mountain 5 minutes from camp (riding)

The rundown of the day:

  • Breakfast… Sleep Late breakfast with cabin sack meals
  • Lunch… Roast Beef Sandwich
  • Dinner… 80’s Night (Sloppy Joes, tri color pasta, TCBY Yogurt)
  • EP… Opening Vespers
  • Weather… hot, humid, scattered showers
