Self care is really “in” right now and I can see why; we don’t take very good care of ourselves! Often times, we don’t eat well, get enough sleep, or take time to exercise. At camp, we feel better and at the end of the summer we go home in great shape in all areas of the 4-fold.

As your camp mom, I’m here to remind you of some ways you can practice self care at home.

All summer, I talk about the “Trifecta of happiness” 3 things you need to practice to stay healthy and feel good: wash, water, screen.

Wash your hands as often as you can; it’s flu season! Drink lots of water; I think that is the answer to bunches of complaints. Headache? Are you drinking enough water? Chapped lips? Are you drinking enough water? Feeling ookie? etc! Wear sunscreen; ok that one is not as important during the winter unless you live in a sunny state. I’m talking to you, Florida! I confess, I don’t wear sunscreen in the winter. There, I said it.

Here are a few other thoughts to add: sleep, eat and feet.

  • Sleep. I see the time stamp on your social media; sleep is important. Who doesn’t love a long rest hour? Add one to your weekends. And it wouldn’t kill ya to go to bed earlier sometimes.
  • Eat. We just finished holidays filled with cookies, candy, cakes, and other delicious treats. Balance that with healthy, fresh food and you’ll feel better. Channel you inner Apple Cart, salad bar, watermelon table thoughts when you are packing your lunch or picking a snack.
  • Feet. If you aren’t involved with team sports fall, winter, spring, chances are exercise is taking a backseat to school and social time. Try to squeeze in a stumblers or find a workout routine online that you can do at home.

Another great self care reminder is: put down your devices! Incorporate one day a week (or more) for no social media. This summer, I suggested “Tech Free Tuesday” I would love for that to catch on and become part of your routine. There is a reason why we love turning our phones in during camp- too much screen time takes you away from other things and frankly, it feels good to step away from it.

The most important self care tip of all is to nurture your spiritual life. Set aside time for devotions (even if they are short), pray, go to church, attend a youth group. All of these are part of maintaining your walk with Christ and growing in Him. It is the most important thing you do. Make it a priority!
