Quiet

Opening Vespers is one of those fixed points that will stand out prominently in our memories of the summer. By positioning this most unexpected EP in the first week of camp, we give it prominence… and we ask the girls to “step it up” and enter into the spirit of the night. It is easy to imagine campers not “getting” such a quiet EP… easy to imagine them goofing off and getting the giggles. Fortunately, the campers always accept this very old program with an attitude of deep appreciation.

Every camper fit into our new Pavilion pit, for the first time in 30 years! Their singing was absolutely wonderful and was amplified by all being in one place (we sing better when tightly grouped together). They listened to the story with rapt attention, in absolute silence. They recited their verses perfectly and when it was time to light the candles they did so with a sense of wonder. The moment of beauty and significance was not lost, I think it was the best Vespers we have ever done. This image of light and love will be repeated at Closing Vespers in 3 1/2 weeks, we will all be surprised at how soon that time will come.

Life passes quickly. Nobody knows this better than parents, but campers begin to discover this fact at camp. We find ourselves appreciating the quiet moments of camp because they focus our attention in a way that is very memorable. We are already looking back on the past week of camp with wonder… we can’t believe it is already Saturday… the quiet of Opening Vespers somehow drives the point home.

The forecast for the next week is almost the same every day. Warm (temperatures in the 80’s), muggy (humidity in the 80% range), sunny in the mornings, scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. This is the weather that generations of Greystone girls have grown to know and love. God is Good!

Menu today:

  • Pancakes and artisan sausage
  • Cheese Burgers and Tater-Tots
  • Poached Salmon and steamed potatoes

We introduced this summers Dance Team Competition at Morning assembly today by showing a short video… you can see it below. Really funny. The girls went wild! Dance teams (of 2 to 12 people) are chosen by the girls who want to participate. The theme this year is “Boy Bands”… choose a song, choreograph a dance, and if good enough present it to the whole camp at the finals. The girls are all talking about it; SO much fun.

Tonight will be Team Fires. The Odds and the Evens will choose their mascots and most importantly their leaders. It is a great EP, marked by lots of cheering as we begin our preparations for Challenge Day next week.

It is Saturday. Time to go out and take some pictures! We have a new professional photographer who will be taking pictures in Cooking and Metal Jewelry this morning and the pool this evening. Always excited to see what the pros come up with!

Thanks for checking in.
