Aftermath

We all know the feeling that follows a really wonderful experience. That warm, satisfied, happy emotion that fills the heart after a big event that turned out better than we dared hope. Today that feeling is all over camp.

Group Night is a HUGE deal. It requires significant preparation and extra work that makes the day a very difficult one for the Group Leaders (who are responsible for pulling off the events that we have arranged). The logistics for transportation, feeding, flow of the evening, “what if” scenerios clearly understood, and counselor preparations are significant. On top of this we have “normal” camp work going on before, during, and after the groups depart for their fun. We do all this work for the “good” of the campers (who absolutely love a great group night).

So we took campers to the skating rink in Hendersonville, the baseball stadium in Asheville, the river at Thunderhead, the top of Apple Hill, Jimboy’s house, Putt Cove, and the Blob Dock… it was madness that began around 5:00 and ended late at night. The rain ended by 6:00, allowing all events to proceed under an almost full moon on a perfect summer night. The mist on the mountains provided the picture card background that we all appreciate so much. It was a delightful night and everyone is still talking about the memories that were made.

Margaret and I particularly enjoyed our role in the evening. The rising 10th graders are a very large group (the largest we have ever had in that grade group) and the weather forced Margaret to empty the house in order to seat 110 comfortably. Yes, we had a dinner party for 110… I still can’t believe it! The girls were so good. They got dressed up (even wearing high heels) and delighted in the air conditioning and the never ending parade of food. The catering company (Hubba Hubba Smokehouse) knocked it out of the park and never ran low on anything. It was wonderful to celebrate this great group of girls in an extravagant fashion.

Today is once again sunny, warm, humid, with promise of afternoon showers. We are looking forward to a big music and dancing EP (featuring Bluegrass music and Contra dancing at one location and a crazy blackout dance party at another).

Breakfast in bed today (remember it was sleep late Friday again) featured biscuits, sausage, yogurt, and juice. Lunch will be sliced pork sandwiches, dinner will be grilled flank steak and polenta.

Thanks again for checking in. We are having a Golden Summer!
