The 6 Best Things About Working Year-Round

1. The People

Even though camp can sometimes feel a little dead without the usual 500 campers and 150 counselors, there’s still a great crew working hard to make camp excellent. I’ve loved getting to spend time with Diane, Jessi, Nancy, Alli, and Josh- you might not have met them, but they’re absolutely incredible- camp would fall apart without them.

2. A Slower Pace

If you’ve ever come into the office during the summer, you know what I mean. The phone is ringing, campers are having their schedules changed, group leaders and counselors are in and out. It’s crazy! Don’t get me wrong, there are many times these days that I wish campers and counselors would come through the door, but it’s nice to slow down a little bit, while at the same time counting the days until everyone comes back!

3. Running the lake road

EA, Alli, Josh, and I run on the lake road together a few times a week. Sometimes, if we’re lucky, we’ll have other people join us. Now that it’s cooled off some, it’s been glorious- I even saw a deer out there a couple weeks ago!

4. Lunch in the office

I miss the fun and craziness of the dining hall, not to mention Gerv and Alli’s delicious food, but office lunch is a great remedy to that. It’s pretty informal- we just gather around the big table in the lower office and eat whatever leftovers we’ve brought from home. No dining hall songs here, just a chance to gather together during the workday.

5. New Projects

So many projects that will make next summer awesome are happening right this minute in camp! It’s been so exciting to see some of the renovations to the fine arts center (the maintenance team even let me “help” with the new floors…thanks, guys). We’re also having lots of conversations about how to make camp better for campers and counselors- exciting things to come all around!

6. Interviews

Interview season has started and we couldn’t be more excited! These days, EA has been spending lots of time on Skype as she gets to know the folks who have applied to be on staff for summer 2017. As the year-round team prays through the applications that are coming in, we’re confident that the Lord is going to give us an incredible team next summer!

Camp is like another world in the winter! As you can tell, we have a great time together, but all the work we do is with you in mind- the campers, counselors, and parents are the heartbeat of the office even when you’re far away. It is truly an honor to do this work for you.
