Sleep Late and Do Nothing

This morning we once again slept late (8:30)… the much beloved Friday tradition at Main Camp continues, this time with fresh Krispy Kreme donuts served for breakfast. The girls love the change in routine, and today will be a celebration of change in that same vein as we “Do Nothing” all morning.

The definition of Do Nothing is “Do What You Want”. If you want to keep your riding lesson, you can do so (along with a bunch of fun activities and games). If you want to stay in your bed and sleep, you can do that too. It is very quiet around camp right now as the girls get going VERY slowly. We are all a bit worn out at this point in the summer and the rest of camp will be very busy with lots of big events, so we welcome a lazy day.

We are about to start a sidewalk chalk competition on the lower road, there is a double feature at the Pavilion (“Freaky Friday” and “Cheaper by the Dozen”), some are enjoying free time at the pool, some are having water balloon wars on the softball field, and all are looking forward to a tailgate party at Waterpark for lunch. We will welcome “Mockingbird Sun” back to Greystone for a FUN lunchtime concert during a FUN sports themed party by the lake. Such a fun day needs a T-shirt, and we surprised the girls with theme t’s for the day as we delivered the fresh donuts. Good times.

I often wonder what the best moment of the summer will be for the girls. The fact is, the favorite moment is different for almost every camper. For some girls, this morning will be the best moment of the summer… I know this because it is clear that the girls are completely loving it. In a camp where every day is “free”, such a day would not stand out… here it becomes an exclamation point to an important time of the session. We can enjoy nothing because our minds and hearts are so full of good things!

  • Our social growth has been great: we are good at developing friendships and appreciate having extra time to do so in a community so full of people we like.
  • Our mental growth has been great: we find good in every circumstance, we are learning lots of new skills, and we say with conviction that we are having a Great Day and feel Terrific!
  • Our physical growth is clear: the effects of three weeks of solid activity and wholesome food is clear. We feel good because our bodies are working very well… such relentless activity makes doing nothing all the more enjoyable as our bodies soak up the rest.
  • Our spiritual growth is real: the power of this community is in Christ. We read a little scripture every day, we pray before meals and when we dismiss from assemblies, our counselors give nightly devotions… the growth comes because God promises that such living is blessed by the presence of the Holy Spirit. When we are growing spiritually, a quiet break is MOST appreciated.

Regular activities resume this afternoon, then we will enjoy the big Birthday Ball, EP will be the camper Talent Show. It is a lovely night, one that in many ways is the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Temperatures are warm (highs projected to be 88 degrees, 5 degrees above normal but still pretty comfortable). No chance of rain today and that pattern will continue through the weekend. Next week should see a return to historical norms (lower temperatures, more afternoon showers).

Thank you for checking in.
