Packing for camp is so much fun! We receive many questions regarding packing and have tried to answer any packing questions below. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact our office (828.693.3182).
What should I pack for camp?
The best place to start is by looking over our packing lists. How often do you do laundry?
We do laundry once a week during your daughter's stay at camp. (Due to the short time frame, we do not do laundry at Junior Camp).
My daughter is coming to August camp. Does she really need all of this stuff?
Good question, and one we get asked quite often! Even though the time frame is shorter, your daughter will still need enough clothes to make it through her 10 days at camp. The weather can also be just as unpredictable in 10 days as it is in our longer sessions! You can judge accordingly based on the time frame; however, many of our clothing suggestions will be needed during her 2-week stay.
Can I bring plug in devices for my daughter's bunk (like fans, lights, etc.)?
Each bunk will have one outlet available for a plug in fan. This fan must be 30 watts or less. You can use a stand-alone or clip-on fan; we would recommend a clip-on fan. Our Greystone Store will be selling fans with a 6 foot cord on Opening Day that work particularly well with our bunks. We do not allow any other plug in devices at camp (this is a safety issue enforced by our fire marshal). We also do not allow extension cords of any kind.
As far as her bunk, what does my daughter need?
When you arrive at camp, your daughter's bed will already be made. We provide sheets and a nice blanket for each camper. Some parents choose to bring their own sheets and blanket. This is fine! (Please know that we cannot wash personal sheets through our laundry system.)
Many girls like decorating their bunks. Your daughter may want to bring pictures from home, stuffed animals, a special blanket, small posters, or anything else to make her space feel homey. In the past, some of these decorations have gotten out of hand and posed fire or safety risks! Please only bring things that can sit on the bed or be taped to your daughter's bunk. These decorations are not necessary, but many girls do bring things to personalize their space.
Trunk or duffle?
You can use either, but we recommend duffle. Each bunk bed has a large wooden drawer underneath it for all of your clothes. Most girls unpack everything into this drawer, as it is just so big! We recommend a duffle bag, as most campers like to unpack all of their clothes into this drawer and then stuff the duffle in the closet.
Can my daughter bring her iPod for her whole cabin to enjoy?
No! If your daughter would like to bring camp appropriate music to share with her cabin, please burn music to CDs prior to arriving at camp.
Does my daughter really need a sleeping bag?
At our June and Main sessions, each cabin group will have the opportunity to enjoy an overnight on Apple Hill — it is a wonderful experience! Girls will need sleeping bags for sleeping under the stars or under one of our covered platforms. At August camp, our oldest age group (girls who have completed the 6th grade) will have an overnight on Apple Hill and will need a sleeping bag. The rest of camp enjoys s'mores around camp and a late night movie. Many girls enjoy bringing their sleeping bags to the late night movie, but it is not necessary for girls to have one. Junior campers do not need a sleeping bag.
Does my daughter's Sunday dress need to be white?
No! Girls can wear a simple skirt or dress to our Sunday worship service. After the service, girls change into their whites, which can be shorts, capris, a skirt…anything white!
If my daughter forgets something, what do I do?
We can help your daughter find almost anything she needs. Our camp store sells batteries, disposable cameras, flashlights, hair brushes, sunscreen, lip gloss, shampoo, whites, etc. Our health facility has extra toothbrushes, toothpaste, and more. We will help your daughter find whatever she needs! If you must send something important to your daughter, please read our No Package Policy first.
I see that you have a 1-piece bathing suit rule. What about a tankini?
We ask that you only pack 1-piece bathing suits and no tankinis.
