Chickens, Canoes, and More

A quick walk around camp, testing the new walkie talkies (cool new digital units, state of the art!) gave me a chance to take a few photos. There is SO MUCH going on, it is time to draw the curtain back on some of the things you will love to check out this summer.

First off is the Chickens! We have dreamed of having an authentic “farm” to enjoy. Not a big and boring farm that is just a lot of work… but a FUN FARM! Something that has planting beds that are easy to tend and easy to harvest. Something that has blueberries (so many that we will never run out). Something that has chickens and maybe even rabbits (chickens for their eggs, rabbits for their cuteness). Something that has a really nice kitchen, to cook farm fresh treats… but where could we put such a wonderful farm? AT JIMBOY“S HOUSE!!!

We have already put in the chicken coop (my youngest daughter Virginia is the official chicken-sitter), have planted the blueberries (three years ago we planted over 100 blueberry bushes on the hill side by my house and they are producing LOTS of blueberries), and are now building the planting beds. We will stagger plantings so there will be things to harvest throughout the summer, will gather eggs daily, will take care of the chickens and other farm yard animals, and will have full use of Jimboy’s gourmet kitchen when it rains or we want to prepare a treat from the garden. It will be a great class!!!

Next is Archery… which has needed a “Shooting Shed” for many years. Riflery has a wonderful program area, with plenty of room to sit and read or talk while you wait for your turn to shoot. Archery now has the same! It is a big building, very pretty with it’s locust railing and bench seats, and a great place to escape the sun or the rain. Archery has been a popular camp program since 1920… it is about time we built something suitable!

Canoeing… we have started work on a new building to house the refurbished “War Canoes”. These 26 foot boats from the 1930’s are wonderful… and we have spent more than a year getting them restored to perfection, so we want to be very careful with them. The posts that you see the men working on are going to become this new building. Located by tennis court #3, it will have two canoes ready for launching whenever the canoeing class wants to have an adventure. Imagine your whole cabin taking one out for cabin night! I can’t wait to see them being used again (it has been at least 10 years since we launched a war canoe… far too long).

Finally (for now)… the woods! You know about the new climbing wall and zip lines, well we did some other work on Apple Hill that you are going to love to see if you take trail rides. The Apple Hill woods are lovely, but they have been kind of over grown. Fifty years of underbrush has made it difficult to see what surrounds you… and it is really beautiful. Lake Summit on one side, beautiful trees and meadows on the other. Trail rides along Apple Hill will be much more pretty (something we care about at Greystone).

Hope you are getting excited, I will share some more new projects with you soon.

Have a Great Day!!!
