4 Ways to Stick to Your Resolutions

If you’re anything like me, you’re the queen of New Years Resolutions. There’s something so nice and hopeful about being able to start fresh and make your year exactly what you want it to be. But then life happens. And more often than not, I get three weeks down the road, discouraged that I’ve already broken the resolutions I was once so committed to.

But this year I’m changing the way I’m thinking about goal-setting, and it’s been so helpful so far! Join me (and my very non-expert opinion) as we figure out these resolutions together.

  1. Give yourself grace! First and foremost, know that you will not be perfect following your resolution, and that that’s okay! Imperfect progress is still progress people! So, whatever your goals are, just know that you will fail at them sometimes, and when you do, take a deep breath, and start again. If we stopped every time we made a mistake we wouldn’t get anything done!
  2. Break your resolutions down into little steps. This one has helped me so much. As long as your resolutions are big, intimidating goals, it’s going to be hard to start on them. So instead, think through what you can do TODAY to move closer towards your resolution. Want to read more? Why not start with just reading 5 pages of a book before bed. Goals get done little by little!
  3. Write it down somewhere you’ll see it every day. It’s so easy to forget what we’re working on in the craziness of everyday life, so why not write yourself a little reminder where you’ll see it? Post your resolution on your mirror, on your computer, or in your locker at school to keep it at the forefront of your mind.
  4. Remember why it matters. You made that goal because it was important to you, because it was in some way a part of the kind of life you want for yourself. It’s easy to lose steam with a resolution that’s just a “to do,” so make it more than that!
