Glorious Rain!

The sky is overcast and a stiff breeze is blowing from the West. Temperatures are in the high 70’s and it feels like we might get another rain shower this afternoon. This pattern (scattered afternoon and evening showers) will break tomorrow, so we are loving the chance of a long rest hour rain shower today!

When was the last time you took a nap on a screen porch during a rain storm? The screen porch is an iconic southern experience that is celebrated at Greystone. Most of our cabins are really just glorified screened porches, complete with tin roofs (the best kind of roof for a screen porch). When it rains, the cabins become cozy cocoons as the soothing sound of the rain mixes with the drastically lowered temperatures make every camper snuggle under her blanket and try to keep her eyes open to read a book or letter. Such moments are some of the BEST moments of the summer and I am delighted to report that the girls are getting to enjoy them in abundance this year!

The downside of this kind of weather pattern is the impact it has on such traditions as Council Fire. We gathered around the flag pole with the dark menacing storm clouds slowly receding to the North East. All looked good for an outside fire but just as we lit the torch to begin the walk up the hill, a huge lightning bolt was seen (3 miles away by the sound of it) and we decided to move indoors. Inside Council Fires are fairly rare, so the girls considered it to be a treat (and were very glad not to risk a drenching). We learned the simple lesson about “Georgia shining in her small corner” and many awards were given out from Archery, Riflery, Bible Memory, Swimming, & Farm and Garden.

Classes are in full swing today, of particular note was the Camper vs. Counselor “Round the World” game in tennis (Counselors won the trophy back after losing it to the campers last Main Camp) and the sailing in Putt Cove (the stiff breeze translates into really great sailing). Hiking trips go out each morning to Thunderhead (our 250 acre mountaintop retreat) and hike on the new trails put in this year. We have about 6 miles of trails to hike, each designed to allow side by side hiking (great for conversations) and not be very difficult (we follow the contour of the mountain side). The views are spectacular and the wildlife abundant. It is a great trip, and only 10 minutes from camp!

EP tonight is a kind of Game Show, dance contest, singing festival, and silly fun fusion. We have been preparing the various elements of this program for a long time, such preparations promise an EP to remember!

Breakfast was a lovely Veggie Fritata with a side of ham, Lunch is Shepherd’s Pie and Dinner is our blow out Spanish Night (athentic Spanish food, it really is amazing).

Thank you for caring about our little world.
