A Break

Afternoon rain showers are delightful in many ways but I think the best part is the rest that arises from a heavy downpour. We hold rest hour until the cell passes and the girls nap or play games as they wait. It is a break and we embrace such moments when they come for we don’t know when the next one will arise.

We have had summers when it doesn’t rain one day in July and we have had summers when it rains every day in July. Both of these weather patterns provide their own kind of memory, but my favorite summer weather pattern is the one we are experiencing this year (scattered showers that provide unexpected unexpected breaks during the routine of camp).

Yesterday we had a big shower that hit during rest hour and another that hit just as we were going to bed. For those who were staying in camp, it was a break that brought much appreciated rest. For the rising 10th graders on their overnight at Thunderhead, it provided a memory for a lifetime!

The 10th graders went to our new “Glamping” property (a 250 acre mountaintop with a couple nice cabins, large meadow, and 6 miles of very nice trails located just 10 minutes from camp). They went on a sunset hike where they were surprised by a guest devotion performance by Ellie Holcomb. Ellie started the program outside (with amazing views as her backdrop) but moved inside after the first song because of a major thunderstorm. There were 70 girls and they fit snugly into the cabin, providing an intimate setting for a wonderful devotion and celebration of music. Afterwards, the rain continued so the girls piled into two mini-buses for the 1/2 mile trip to their overnight cabin. By all accounts, it was the best night of the summer for those girls (and that is saying something!).

The 11th and 12th graders loved their time in Asheville (we watched “The Secret Life of Pets”), the rest of camp were able to spread out in the pavilion (watched “Cinderella”, the new one). It was a great ending to a great day.

We have regular classes today, the chance of rain has gone down a bit but is still very likely, we will eat chicken brocholli and rice for lunch and eggplant parmesian for dinner. EP will be a celebration of cabin friendships as the counselors do individualized programs for Cabin Night.

Thank you for checking in, we hope you have a Great Day!
