Saturday

A cold front arrived last night. The particular moment of arrival was felt by all, for it happened as we gathered for the Opening Vespers program- a stiff breeze (about 20 mph) came steady off the lake and played havoc with our candles! It was so windy Margaret had to stand by the camp candle as I told the story of light, protecting it from the wind. Even so, we had to re light the camp candle about 5 times (the first time we have ever had such trouble as far as I know).

The girls were fantastic. They even teared up… an amazing demonstration of their hearts for camp and for the simple truths taught here. Really amazing that such a program would be embraced by a group this large and this “cool”.

These girls really are cool. The campers and counselors at camp are the coolest people I know. In the real world I would be awed, but here we talk to each other without a thought. It is wonderful to see the unlikely friendships that form here and how such friendships stand the test of time. Every year we are blessed by “senior citizen” former campers who visit with their camp friends (friends who have proven to be life long and true in all circumstances). Such friendships are reason enough to do camp.

Tonight we will have Team Meetings where the girls learn the team cheers, choose their team mascots for the summer, and elect team leaders. We begin the night on opposite sides of the lake and end together at the Dining Hall to sing camp songs and induct the leaders into their new positions. It is a fun night and very steeped in tradition and spirit.

Thanks for reading… even on the weekend! We are having a blast.
