Free Time
During free time, you will be allowed to sign up for certain classes at camp, if you are interested. These classes will be announced during your orientation. During the afternoon free time we will typically play some type of group sport such as ultimate Frisbee, soccer or basketball. This is a great time for people of all talents to get together, have fun and get in shape. If you feel that you need a more specific training schedule, there are plenty of people who will run crosscountry, ride bicycles, swim laps, or lift weights. If you are trying to get in shape for a school sport, I guarantee that you will have the opportunity at Greystone.
Evenings
Most nights, we will join the rest of the camp in Evening Program. These are always fun and you might even get involved. Some nights we may do something by ourselves such as a scavenger hunt, bowling, laundry or climbing the wall.
Sundays
Sunday is everyone’s day off except the counselors. Church is at 12:00 with rest of camp and after lunch we always do some fun activity. It could be anything from Skiing on lake Keowee to a movie and dinner in town. Whatever the activity, it is always enjoyable to relax and have fun as a group without having to worry about the dishes.
Working in the Greystone Kitchen is an experience that will change your life forever! You will learn to work hard, play hard and get along with other people. In the course of a day, you will help in feeding over 700 people 3 exceptional meals a day. You will also find time to play hours of group sports such as Ultimate Frisbee, Soccer, Basketball, Tennis and others that we invent as the summer rolls along. There will be time for running and lifting weights as well as summer reading. We tie everything that we do together with spiritual truths that we apply to our everyday lives. If you are willing to work harder and have more fun than any of your friends back home, the Greystone Kitchen is the place for you.
Purpose
Our purpose is to do all that we can to help young people develop balanced lives through the development of four aspects of life: the physical, mental, social, and spiritual. We believe that this program is a wonderful place to develop these in a hands on environment.
Who
As long as you are at least 13 years old you can work in the kitchen. We have people from all over the country and some from other countries both male and female. We have three groups of young people that work in the kitchen, campers, assistant counselors and counselors.
Campers
To be a kitchen camper you must be at least 13 years of age and have permission from your parents to work. The primary responsibilities of the camper are to wash dishes. We feed 700 people three meals per day so as you may have guessed we have a lot of dishes, pots and pans. Because of the large number of people that we hire for this job the work is relatively quick and believe it or not, fun.
Assistant Counselor
To be an assistant counselor you must be between the ages of 16 and 18 and preferably have had Greystone kitchen experience. You will be assigned an area of the kitchen and will be responsible for working as a team to make sure that the duties of that area are completed in a timely and professional manner. You will also be responsible for helping your counselor at night with devotions and for monitoring the cabin certain nights of the week after taps.
When it is not your turn to monitor after taps you will be allowed to walk into camp and visit with the other counselors until 11:30pm. You must be back in your cabin by 11:40pm.
Counselor
All counselors must have completed their freshman year in college and preferably have Greystone kitchen work experience. You will be assigned certain areas of the kitchen to lead. You are responsible for making the task lists that will be posted in these areas each day. These tasks will include all food preparation and cleaning requirements for the day. You will also be there to answer any questions that your campers have, devotions at night and for monitoring the cabin certain nights of the week after taps.
When it is not your turn to monitor after taps you will be allowed to visit with the other camp counselors. You must be back in your cabin by 12:00am.
