A Little Rain

We awoke to rain for the first time this summer. That is quite a statement, for this part of the country is known for getting a lot of rain (the summer of 2012 it rained quite literally every day!). By the time we went to breakfast, the rain had passed but the clouds remain and give a good possibility of showers later in the afternoon (60% chance). We couldn’t be more excited!

At camp a little rain provides a nice break in the routine. Classes go on as normal (as long as it is not a thunder storm) and we embrace the simple joys of playing in the rain.

When was the last time you played in the rain? For some of these girls, this will be their first time! In the “real world” we protect ourselves from such things as rain (we live most of our days in climate controlled spaces, avoiding changes in the weather) so it takes a moment to realize how much fun stomping in puddles and playing in mud actually is. As soon as they try it, they love it!

The counselors “get it” and lead by example… rain days often are the favorite days of the summer. We can’t wait!

We ate a hearty breakfast of pancakes and sausage links (along with our famous fruit and cereal bar, yogurt, granola, oatmeal, and juice). Lunch will be hamburgers and dinner is chicken piccata… huge salad bar… wonderful food!

I talked about physical growth at breakfast club, encouraging the girls to try a “Greystone Bite” of all the food we serve at the table. We make everything from scratch, serve well balanced meals that have a gourmet twist. If ever there was a time to try something new it is here! So we serve food they like (the poppy seed chicken last night was amazing) and also serve food they might not recognize (brussel sprouts are a camp specialty). We have parents asking for our vegetable recipes because their girls come home raving about the green beans or asparagus and moms want to know how to keep them excited about eating vegetables (the recipe is simple: drizzle with olive oil, salt, and pepper; roast on a sheet pan in a 375 degree oven). When we eat well, we feel better about life. A good lesson for us all!

Tonight we will have our Counselor Talent Show, a camper favorite that features a bunch of very silly skits and a few nice talent acts. Tomorrow will be our BIG CARNIVAL (something the girls really look forward to) and then we transition into big end of camp programs. August Camp is like that… a BIG opening week followed by a BIG closing week. Nonstop action and a lot of fun.

Thank you for your girls. They are absolutely delightful!
